The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the need to focusing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria digs.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
