Red Cross Assists Hamas in Recovery for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

A Red Cross official stated that its personnel accompanied members of Hamas into areas of Gaza still under IDF authority to facilitate the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which began on 10 October, the group is obligated to hand over the remains of all Israeli hostages promptly. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has consented to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

“At the request of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) joined a participant in the hostilities as the group searched for the bodies of the deceased individuals past the military-established ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the organization.

She added: “The parties to the hostilities established the modalities of the mission and entrusted the Red Cross to act as a neutral intermediary. We was had no part in the discussions.”

The official further clarified: “The ICRC was did not participate in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it engage in the retrieval of remains.”

Recently, the US president delivered a two-day ultimatum to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to begin returning the remains of the deceased hostages, which include American citizens, quickly, or the other countries participating in this great peace will take action,” he posted on his social‑media platform.

As the two-day window approached, the group, accompanied by the Red Cross, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to look for bodies past the line indicating the withdrawal of troops inside Gaza. An Israeli spokesperson said the Egyptian team would use excavator machines and vehicles in the operation.

The news was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told Hebrew-language media that members of the group had been allowed to enter areas of the region under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to search for the bodies of captives, together with Egypt’s and ICRC teams.

“For this purpose, representatives were allowed to cross the designated boundary,” the source was cited as stating.

Video released by a media outlet appeared to show individuals of a Hamas unit – belonging to the organization’s armed faction responsible for guarding captives – escorting a Red Cross vehicle in a coastal area close to Rafah, which lies outside Israeli military control.

Difficulties in Finding Captive Bodies

Efforts to locate for the bodies of individuals taken captive has become one of the most sensitive matters in the ceasefire reached between the two sides. However, the attempt to find the remains has proved challenging from the beginning, given the presence of an approximate enormous amount of debris across the territory, where, according to local health authorities, at least 10,000 residents are recorded as unaccounted for, buried under the rubble.

Conflicting Claims on Body Whereabouts

Hamas has stated it lacks information on the precise whereabouts of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with a number of its teams that had been holding the captives and were allegedly eliminated during Israeli bombardments.
