Arrangements to hold Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle during the upcoming World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, despite the Egyptian and Iranian football federations voiced strong concerns about a planned “Pride Match.”
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. These events will take place around the tournament group match between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body will permit Pride flags inside the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s role is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities beyond Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation declared it refused to be linked to events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “objections against the issue.”
Fifa maintains full authority over match venues on matchdays. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was in effect at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of flags being seized.
The Pacific Northwest is home to one of the nation’s most prominent Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” the statement concluded.
