The co-founders behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever stopped the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he will independently develop the controversial flavor within a personal series showcasing causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
This latest development escalates the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
The founder indicated that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that the company was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, citing worries that its independence was undermined after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told journalists.
